I didn’t exactly graduate to Un des Meilleurs Ouvrier de France this holiday, but I did cook and bake my Memorialism off, and everyone in my universe is FULL.
It started with dry beans. I spent two summers in a row in Greece, where they have the fattest, sweetest, most sultry beans — J.Lo beans. Been wanting to recreate forever.
They’re gigantic, but I’m not sure what kind, so I fooled around with cannellinis…as a lucky guess. I re-hydrated them over night, which was a pain fun little project, but by the morning, I could see they weren’t the island beans I’d been imagining.
Alas, I shifted gears. I tossed in some smokey (turkey) sausage, ripe cherry tomatoes and fresh basil from my tiny balcony garden. The dish wasn’t my Grecian fantasy (what is?!), but it made for a beautiful, unexpected, improvised meal, and I’ll eat it all week with pleasure.
The rest of my apron endeavors included a luscious lemon cheesecake…the onion, the potato and cumin quiche that always inflates my ego…and “Campari-Orange Pops” from this month’s Bon Appetit — BRILLIANT.
Attempted to bake bread, which was a bust because I stupidly substituted whole-wheat flower for All-Purpose, without adapting the other measurements. Wound up with two dense, deadly-weapon loaves. Oh well. That’s what the bagel store is for. Sesame w/ butter, please.
What were your edible (or not) highs ‘n lows this weekend?
